Teaching Certificate in "Geography and Economics"

Starting from 2015 the Teaching Certificate is offered as a Bachelor's and Master's programme. The old Diploma programme is thereby replaced. More information can be found here.

What will you learn in the programme?

Depending on the chosen fields of study, the programme encompasses between 160 and 200 units. It is composed of subject-specific, didactical and pedagodical contents, a school internship and elective courses. Besides Geography, you have to pick one of the following teaching subjects: German, English, French, Italian, Slovenian, History, Social Studies, Civil Education, Informatics or Mathematics. The teachings subjects are freely combinable. In the course of the programme you have to conduct two school internships: the first one for a period of twelve weeks in the fifth semester and a second one for twelve months directly after graduation.


What makes studying Geography in Klagenfurt special?

The relatively small numbers of students allow an intensive and personal exchange between the lecturers and the students. The good student-staff ratio ensures high-class education. Three Austrian Educational Competence Centres (AECC) are located at the University of Klagenfurt (Center for Didactics of German; Center for Didactics of Mathematics; Center for School and teaching Development). Many supplemental courses including German as a second language, civil education and e-leraning allow additional qualifications that will enhance the opportunities on the job market.


Career oppertunities

The programme is designed for jobs in education. Graduates are allowed and qualified to become school teachers in public elementary, as well as lower and upper secondary schools. Besides teaching, in schools, graduates can find jobs in adult education and in the media.
